Season of Home: Buying, Decorating, and Making a Difference This Holiday

Giving Back this Holiday Season:

Many of us are lucky enough to have a home, a warm gathering place and the food to fill our tables this season. But for others, that’s not a given. A thoughtful tablescape can be more than just decor — it can reflect gratitude, hospitality and awareness of community.
You might:

  • Include a small place-card or note at your dinner setting acknowledging the season of giving and encouraging guests to pause and reflect.
  • Use your table as an opportunity to talk about gratitude — for food, for home, and for your community.
  • Invite your guests to bring a canned-good item, toiletry or non-perishable donation as part of the evening, turning your gathering into one of sharing beyond your table.

Ways to get involved locally — Newton & Brookline, MA

If you’re looking to give back this holiday season (or anytime), here are several local organizations where your time, or donations, can make a meaningful difference:

Brookline Food Pantry (Brookline, MA)

  • This pantry serves Brookline residents and aims to ensure “none of our Brookline neighbors goes to bed hungry.” Brookline Food Pantry+2Brookline Food Pantry+2
  • Volunteer opportunities include: transporting food/donations, delivering groceries to home-bound clients (vehicle required), packing bags, working at the distribution table and unloading trucks. Brookline Food Pantry+1
  • You can also host a food drive, donate paper bags for reuse, or raise awareness in your office/school community. Brookline Food Pantry
  • With hundreds of households served weekly, especially during times of increased need, your help is very meaningful.
  • If you’d like to contribute financially or through food items: healthy, nutritious items (low sugar cereal, whole grains, low sodium items) and kid-friendly snacks are especially appreciated. unitedparishbrookline.org

Centre Street Food Pantry (Newton, MA)

  • This food relief agency serves residents of Newton, Brookline (and other surrounding towns) and emphasizes providing fresh food, groceries and personal care items with dignity. Centre Street Food Pantry+1
  • Their “greatest need” for volunteers is on Tuesdays from 10 am-6 pm, but there are other days for unloading food, bag-packing and distribution. Centre Street Food Pantry
  • They specifically mention a turkey drive to help families during Thanksgiving — a sign the need rises in the holidays and giving now helps more. Centre Street Food Pantry

Home Buyer News:

Opportunity if you're still looking to buy a home now through the end of the year

If you’ve been on the fence about purchasing a home, the stretch from now through the end of the year may offer some unique advantages. Interest rates may shift, inventory often changes, and motivated sellers heading into the holidays can present good opportunities.
Here are a few things to consider:

  • With fewer buyers competing in the late-year months, you may have more negotiating power.
  • Sellers may be more open to closing quickly or including extras (appliances, credits, etc.) if they’d like to wrap things up before year-end.
  • If you buy now, you may benefit from locking in the current interest rate and begin building equity early.

If you’re in the market in the Newton/Brookline area (and broader greater Boston) you may find that making a move in this period positions you well heading into a new year: you’re settled, can take advantage of tax/financial planning, and start fresh. I’d be happy to talk through local market conditions or help you map out a timeline.

Getting your house ready for the holidays…

Once you’re in your home (or preparing to sell), the holiday season is a great time to make your space feel warm, welcoming, and staged (if you’re selling) or simply festive (if you’re staying). Here are some ideas:

  • Clean & declutter: Before decorating, take time to clear surfaces, remove items that feel overly personal or cluttered, and clean high-traffic areas. A fresh, tidy space always feels more open and inviting.
  • Focus on key spaces: The entryway, living room / gathering space, dining table and the kitchen tend to be the most used during holiday visits. Make these rooms shine.
  • Tablescapes & decor: A beautiful table setting doesn’t need to be extravagant. Think layering a table runner or cloth, coordinating dinnerware, adding candles (battery or real), and perhaps a centerpiece of seasonal greens or berries.
  • Lighting & ambience: Swap harsh overhead lights for soft lamps, string lights or candles. Use textured pillows, throws or rugs to add warmth.
  • Maintain balance: If you’re selling, you’ll want to decorate in a way that feels homey but not overly personalized — you still want prospective buyers to imagine themselves living there. If you’re staying, lean more into your style and make the space comfortable for your gatherings.
  • Outdoor curb appeal: Don’t neglect the outside. A well-lit entrance, swept porch, seasonal wreath or lanterns can make a strong first impression.
  • Repair small details: Loose doorknobs, peeling paint, dirty windows, or a malfunctioning light switch are small things but can detract from the overall feel of readiness.

Tips for Creating the Perfect Tablescape:

1. Start with a Theme or Color Palette

Choose two to three colors or a loose theme to guide your look — think natural and rustic, elegant and metallic, or modern minimalism. Limiting your palette helps everything feel cohesive rather than cluttered.

2. Layer, Don’t Clutter

Start with a base (tablecloth, runner, or placemats), then layer plates, napkins, and decor. Vary textures — for example, pair linen napkins with wood chargers and glass accents. The goal is dimension, not overload.

3. Mix Heights and Materials

Vary heights with candles, vases, or seasonal elements (like pumpkins, pinecones, or greenery). Using different materials — ceramics, glass, wood, and metal — keeps the look dynamic and balanced.

4. Incorporate Nature

Seasonal greenery, branches, or even herbs like rosemary and eucalyptus make simple yet stunning accents. They add texture, fragrance, and an organic feel to the table.

5. Add Candlelight (Safely!)

Candles instantly create warmth and ambiance. Use a mix of tapers, votives, or battery-operated candles if you want low-maintenance glow. Cluster them down the center for impact.

6. Create Simple Place Settings

Fold napkins neatly or tie them with twine or ribbon and tuck in a sprig of greenery or a name tag. Even small touches like this make guests feel thought of and add charm.

7. Keep Centerpieces Low

Make sure guests can see each other across the table — anything too tall becomes a visual (and conversational) barrier. A long, low arrangement is elegant and functional.

8. Add a Personal or Meaningful Touch

Include handwritten place cards, gratitude notes, or a small token at each setting. These little details make your table feel intentional and heartfelt.

9. Don’t Forget Function

Pretty is great, but practicality matters — leave space for serving dishes and glasses. If you have a large meal planned, keep the centerpiece minimal so there’s room for the food.

10. Finish with Soft Lighting and Music

Dim overhead lights, add a gentle playlist, and you’ll have an atmosphere that feels just as inviting as it looks.

As we move toward the end of the year, this period can be one of transition, preparation, celebration — and reflection. Whether you’re thinking about buying a home, sprucing up your current one for the holidays, setting a beautiful table, or giving back to your community, it’s all part of building a richer sense of home and connection.

If you’d like help with the home-buying timeline, staging your house for the holidays, or connecting to other local volunteer opportunities beyond what I listed, just say the word. Let’s make this season thoughtful, generous and intentional.

Best,

Robin
