Design Trends for 2022

Design trends in 2021 saw a blending of style with practicality and home comfort. As everyone continued to spend an increase of time in their homes function became even more important than form. Some of the top trends from the past year include not-so-open floor plans, classic blue tones, prioritizing storage space, and natural elements such as earth tones, terracotta vases, marble coffee tables, and wicker baskets.

In 2022 interior designers are predicting an emphasis of importance of sustainable materials to elegant design elements that are unique and showcase individuality. Here are some of the top predicted trends for the new year.

Two-Tone Color Combinations:

According to Nicola Harding, director of Nicola Harding & Co, ‘A two-tone scheme allows extra definition and interest without overcomplicating a scheme. When looking to following this trend keep in mind the darker shade should be used below eyeline while the lighter shade above.

Biophilic Design:

Indoor/outdoor living spaces are going to be even more coveted in 2022. Maximizing natural lighting, ventilation, and natural landscape features will be a focus as designers try to increase the connectivity to the natural environment. “Biophilic design is a direct response to our modern-day world and the unrelenting demand of our technology-driven lives. Research studies have shown that our access to nature and natural elements help to decrease stress and improve our feeling of wellbeing. True biophilic design is achieved when it contributes to our overall health and productivity” according to Dompierre.

Sustainability:

“Sustainability has become a major issue for everyone, as it should. Looking into the sustainability of everything is a must and it is really excellent that so many designers are trying to learn what the best materials are to use for the long-term health of our eco-system. Luckily, there is a lot to choose from!” — Robert and Cortney Novogratz for The Shade Store. When looking to design sustainably keep in mind these five goals: design for energy efficiency, low environmental impact, waste reduction, longevity, and healthy environments.

A Return to Tradition:

“Expect English roll arm sofas, wingbacks, simple dining tables based on antique styles and pieces with detail and some history. For materials, we’re going to see a lot more natural materials become popular again. Marble, real wood, linens, mohair — things that feel more organic and nice to the touch.” — Erin Gates. Another way to add a traditional touch to any space is to add pieces with curved or more feminine silhouettes.

Pantone’s 2022 Color of the Year, Very Peri:

Pantone’s color of the year for 2022 is named “Very Peri”. “Very Peri displays a spritely, joyous attitude and dynamic presence that encourages courageous creativity and imaginative expression.” — Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director, Pantone Color Institute. Expect to see this blue with violet-red undertone shade on items ranging from furniture to accent pieces.
